“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’” -Hebrews 13:5
The author of Hebrews tells us to live our lives content and free from the love of money. I’m sure this is not new information for you- this is a message we know intuitively but one that is difficult to live out. But did you notice that in the second part of this verse he gives us the way to accomplish this difficult feat? He doesn’t say we can be content with what we have because God will give us everything we desire. He says we can live free from the love of money and with contentment because God will always be with us.
Material possessions aren’t the way to contentment. Having your physical needs met isn’t the way to free yourself from the love of money. Being in the presence of God is the only thing that will accomplish that in your life. Being content isn’t about having your physical needs met, it’s about having your spiritual needs met. Being free from the love of money isn’t accomplished when you have enough of it, it happens when you realize you are filled to overflowing with God’s love and presence.
We appreciate what we have when we remember Who we have. As you start the season of preparation for the upcoming holidays, keep yourself free from the love of money and be content with what you have because you know Who has you.
