Week 1, Day 4: Our Loving Father
“They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.” -Hebrews 12:10 (NIV)
Whatever the cause, as our Father, God loves us enough to do whatever it takes to help us move toward holiness. God cares more about our holiness than our happiness. He cares more about our character than our comfort. The purpose of pain is not punishment, but refinement.
No matter the source, God is in control. We can take offense to the pain we experience, or we can take comfort knowing God is helping us become more like Jesus through our suffering. Because we are his children, He loves us enough not to let us live in our sinful state; He desires to mature us, and discipline is necessary for growth. Discipline knocks off our rough edges and refines our thoughts, motives, and mindsets.
