Week 3, Day 4
Grounded people are able to have empathic relationships that move past sympathy without going too far into rescuing. Sympathy keeps us at a distance, controlling how much of the other person’s pain affects our own lives. But empathy that moves too far into rescuing is exerting control into parts of others’ lives where we do not have control. Empathy is finding the healthy balance between involvement and separation that allows us to help others grow through their pain and walk beside them as they move to a place of health.
-Where do you plot yourself between sympathy and rescuing?
-How do you feel about moving past sympathy and into empathy?
-How do you know when your empathy has moved into rescuing?
