“But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.” Luke 22:51 (NIV)
Our selfishness, pride, and self-righteousness can get us into trouble. We can, like Peter, fool ourselves into thinking we’re acting out of a sense of justice when in fact, vengeance lies underneath that thin veneer of righteous anger. Peter wasn’t really trying to show a genuine respect for people using a just behavior or treatment. He wielded his sword out of vengeance- trying to punish those who were coming to arrest His Lord. On the surface, he defended it as justice, when it was in fact vengeance- punishment for a perceived wrong.
Do you ever find yourself acting out of vengeance and calling it justice? When you do, you become the perpetrator of injustice –the one against whom God must enact His justice to bring you back home to Himself.
