Week Two, Day Four
Most of us don’t think of Jesus as offensive. Is Jesus really offensive? Some people in history sure thought so. In John 6:25-59, Jesus was teaching His disciples some hard truths about Himself and their ability to follow Him fully.
The statements Jesus made were highly offensive to the ears of the people following Him.
The sinful nature in each of us is always offended by the righteousness of God. When we hear Jesus calling into question our desire for comfort and ease or challenging the motive for our relationship with Him, it makes our selfishness and pride bubble to the surface and rebel against surrender, submission, and a willingness to give up control.
Awareness Prayer – Jesus, help me overcome offense and embrace your grace.
Reflection Question – what aspect of the gospel is most offensive in our culture?
