How many times during your week would you say you feel weary and burdened? I bet we could ask how many times during your average day you feel weary and burdened! A long day, and especially a long week, can make us feel tired, weary, spent, exhausted, and burdened. When the energy we start the day with or gain from our afternoon cup of coffee runs out, we are often left feeling sluggish and sometimes even feel worthless.
Matthew 11:28-30 says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Jesus calls us to follow Him, not only in in action and behavior, but also in the way He rested. Energy is an important resource that allows us to live out our purpose in life. When it’s depleted, we often try and find a quick pick-me-up or push through the exhaustion, but Jesus calls us to come to Him, to give Him our burden and take on His yoke. He beckons us to learn from His gentleness and His humble heart, and to find our rest in Him.
In what areas of your life are you feeling your energy run out faster than you can refuel? How might your methods of refueling be different than the rest Jesus calls us to find in Him? How can you shift from running on empty to taking on the yoke of Jesus and walking in step with Him? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
