Tuesday, October 12th - Becoming More Aware

Week Five, Day Two

Read the beginning of the story of Cain and Abel in Genesis 4:1-7.

God wasn’t upset with Cain because his offering wasn’t identical to Abel’s. God wasn’t looking for their offerings to be equal. He was looking at their motivations. God treated Cain and Abel fairly. Abel was rewarded for his earnest, generous heart, while God looked on Cain with displeasure. That response was fair and appropriate for who they were and what God saw in their hearts.

Read Genesis 4:8-16.

Cain allowed the competition to come between himself and his brother. He felt justified in doing so. His rage at what he considered this unjust treatment by God brought about anger and jealousy that ended up destroying both himself and his brother.

Awareness Prayer – Father, I trust you are always fair and will do what is best for me.

Reflection Question – When do you confuse fair with equal?
